After signing a one-day minor league contract with Boston Red Sox, former Major League Baseball player Nomar Garciaparra announced Wednesday in a press conference held at City of Palms Park that he retired from baseball and will be working as analyst for ESPN. The retirement ended his nearly 14-year career with the organization.

 

The 36-year-old Garciaparra said in his statement that it was his dream to retire in a Red Sox uniform and that he has had chance to fulfill such dream. He emphasized on the meaning of Red Sox Nation anfd the fans to him and his family. He said: “I always tell people Red Sox Nation is bigger than any nation out there, and to be able to tell people that I came back home to be back to Red Sox Nation is truly a thrill.” He said that it was fans who affected greatly on his decision of retiring with Red Sox.

 

Retiring from Boston Red Sox, Nomar Garciaparra will become baseball analyst of ESPN. He will be appearing primarily on “Baseball Tonight” program. At the same time, the former Major League Baseball player will also works as an occasional game commentator.

Of the 14-year career, Nomar had 9 seasons with Boston Red Sox. He played for the organization from 1994 to 2004 after having had a successful career at Georgia Tech. In 200e left Boston and joined the Chicago Cubs until 2006. He then played for Los Angeles Dodgers from 2006 to 2008 and served as a part-time player with Oakland Athletics in 2009.

 

He finished his 14-year-career with 229 home runs, 936 RBIs and a .313 batting average.

 

Red Sox manager Terry Francona said in the Wednesday conference that the time he had Garciaparra in the Fall League was “one of the highlights of my career”.

 

Garciaparra was selected six times in All-Star in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003,  and 2006. In 1997, He won Silver Slugger Award and AL Rookie of the Year. He was awarded NL Comeback Player of the Year in 2006.
