Learning how to target market is one of the first things that a new business marketing student learns. In business school this is called Market Segmentation. Market segmentation enables you to target market like the big corporations do so it is an important thing to learn about.

In business school a business student learns that a market segment is:

– Quantifiable
– Reachable
– Special
– Resilient
– Sizeable

Now before you start disagreeing, read on:

If you cannot measure your market segment in some way, communicate with them, differentiate them, get to know them, and count them, then you don’t have a target market. Your numbers will be different from a huge corporation, of course, and sizeable means a lot different things to the individual sole proprietor than someone like Wal-Mart.

In addition a business student learns that you can segment your market into geographical areas, demographics (sex, income, income, occupation) and by buying behavior. If you can identify that your target market consists of: Married women between the ages of 27 and 37 with children ages 2 to 7, who desire to earn money in their spare time. You can make sure that your marketing efforts speak to their fears, their desires, their hopes and dreams as well as their special problems, such as lack of time, and child care issues.

A lot of Internet marketers think that they can cast a wide net to everyone with the same advertisement and the same words, but this is not true, and often your efforts will fall flat if you fail to target your market as narrowly as possible. If you do not address your target market in your marketing strategy you will have no direction for your content or your products and this could spell failure for your business.

Learning how to target market simply consists of either deciding who needs your product, or deciding for whom you want to create products and learning what they need. Either way, you must stress the benefits of your products in words that your target market understands. Words that speak to your target market are easy to find if you know who they are.

Once you learn who you are trying to attract, you can learn how to catch the attention of them by studying your target market. Learn their likes, their dislikes, their fears, their joys — learn everything that you can about them so that you can address them within your articles, your sales pages, your blogs and all your content. No information can be too small to know. You need to know their ages, their gender, their education, their marital status, their ethnicity, their religion, where they are in their family life cycle. Then within that information you can narrow down even more to who exactly is your ideal client and focus everything toward them.

Remember learning how to target market is also about learning how to teach your target market who you are, the benefits you offer, and how your product or service is the best thing for them.
